UAL is looking for its next Vice-Chancellor. Join the university-wide conversation about what skills and experience the role needs and what our future ambitions should be.

Our Vice-Chancellor, Sir Nigel Carrington, announced in January that he will be stepping down from his role at the end of 2020. We are currently seeking his successor - and we'd like you to contribute your thoughts.

The recruitment process

Our Chair of UAL's Court of Governors, David Isaac CBE, will be leading a search committee.

We have engaged Perrett Laver, a leading international executive search firm, to assist us in identifying the best candidates worthy of leading UAL into the next phase of its development. Alongside a public advertisement for the role, Perrett Laver will conduct an extensive global search for candidates.

The process will follow global best practice, our own statutes and guidance from the Committee of University Chairs (CUC).

Consulting the UAL community

We have asked Perrett Laver to undertake a consultation exercise, taking in the views of staff, students and broader stakeholders. They'll lead conversations with existing groups, representatives and leaders across UAL.

These conversations will be conducted online and on the phone, in accordance with current coronavirus social distancing rules.

Perrett Laver want to develop a thorough understanding of the role. What kind of skills and experience will our next Vice-Chancellor need? We hope people will express their views on the characteristics they would like to see.

Perrett Laver will use the feedback they collect to draft the person specification and candidate pack.

The consultation process will be supported by Stephen Marshall, University Secretary and Registrar and Naina Patel, Human Resources Director.

Get involved in the selection process

We would like to encourage all staff and students in the UAL community to contribute their thoughts on the following areas.

Your feedback will help Perrett Laver understand our vision, strategy and character as an institution.

  • What is distinctive about UAL?
  • What characteristics should UAL focus on holding on to?
  • What should UAL's ambition be for its next phase of development?
  • What will be the key challenges when it comes to achieving that ambition?
  • What skills, experience and characteristics should the next Vice-Chancellor ideally have?

Please send your contributions to UALVC@perrettlaver.com. All comments will go directly to the team at Perrett Laver and be treated in the strictest confidence.

The deadline for feedback is 11 May 2020.
